Transportation to Disney Springs and Mickey's Backyard BBQ

Unread post by honeyjo »

Just a few questions about transportation while we anticipate our trip this coming October.

If we take the bus from Riverside to Disney Springs, it appears there is more than one drop off location at DS? Am I correct? We are looking to go to the Marketplace area for my daughters BBB appointment but it looks like there is a bus stop very close. And also, if we took the fairy back to Riverside after the appointment, the dock that we need is the dock near this same Marketplace area, right?

One more scenario: We need to get to Mickey's Backyard BBQ coming from Riverside. What are your recommendations for our route with Disney Transportation? I've read to plan anywhere from 40 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes travel time. And also, to arrive 40 minutes early. Kinda wondering if we plan that amount of time, using the high-end calculations for travel time, if we will be waiting around significantly with impatient children? :)

Thanks for your help. Love this site!

The boat dock for the Port Orleans ferry is located next to the Rainforest Cafe, at the extreme end of the marketplace section. The buses however now only use the central bus stop in the Landings area, just behind Planet Hollywood, so when you get dropped off by bus you'll need to walk through the new shopping mall area and past World of Disney, the Marketplace Co-op and Once Upon a Toy to get to the new BBB location (note: BBB is no longer inside the World of Disney store). After the appointment, it's a short walk back to the ferry dock.

For the BBQ at Fort Wilderness, probably the easiest route is to get the bus to the Magic Kingdom and then a ferry boat over to Fort Wilderness. Allow at least an hour in case you just miss a bus and a boat, perhaps a little bit longer. There are play facilities at Fort Wilderness if you do arrive early.

The new DS bus depot is certainly much nicer than the old one, and the central location makes good sense overall, but it is a bit of a walk now from the main boat dock on the far east end of the Marketplace (which is the only dock the PO boats use). Don't forget to allow about 15 minutes to walk between the two locations. The central boat dock for the water taxi (right next to Jock Lindsey's Hanger Bar) is about 5 minutes walk from the bus depot. We recently used the water taxi to go from the Marketplace dock to the Landings area (and vice-versa), as it was very hot and it was more pleasant than walking that far in the heat/humidity. One thing we did notice was that if the boat service (both to PO and the water taxis) is suspended due to weather, it is a long haul to walk to the bus depot from the Marketplace dock. (It was more convenient when the buses were on the same end of DS.) Something to think about if the weather looks iffy and you are at the Landings or the West Side: Check on boat operation before you get too far away from the bus terminal, so you don't walk all the way to the east end, then have to walk all the way back to the bus depot. I think many folks don't realize just how big DS is. It really has grown and is more like spending time at one of the theme parks (without the admission price, of course). :D

As an alternative when going to the campground area, we usually drive over to the campground parking lot and take the internal shuttle bus down to the lakefront area. (You can't drive there, as they don't have car parking at the lake.) That can still take a while, depending on how busy the buses are, but it is usually quicker than coming in from the lake side as Andre suggested. We have gone that way a number of times, and it is a nice boat ride, but if you do have a car you can save some time by driving yourself. Just allow for time to take the bus from the parking lot down to the lake. Unfortunately, there is no bus transport directly from resort to resort, including the campground.

Be wary of weather if you do this though... we went to the BBQ in susnshine via exactly this route, and all was well. During the BBQ, the skies emptied...and the boats stopped running. This means that instead of a nice boat trip back, we had to work out in fading light how the internal bus system worked. We had to catch an internal bus, a bus out to a park, and then a third bus back to Riverside. One thing we did notice was that a crate of towels magically appeared for our use as we left the BBQ, nice disney touch! Also worth noting is that the aircon on a bus is fierce when you've been rained on and are a bit damp, and a bit of anxiety as to whether you're on the right bus add to the cold feeling.
It worked out in the end, but if you check out where the internal bus routes are and what your contingency plan is while you're nice and warm, it will put you a step ahead !
