Public Holidays at Port Orleans
For this month’s activities and schedules, and also an extensive archive of previous events, please see our Recreation Schedules page.
Christmas / New Year
The Christmas decorations usually start to go up around the Disney World resorts at the start of Thanksgiving week.
Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is celebrated at Port Orleans all year round – and especially at the New Orleans inspired Port Orleans French Quarter. However on actual Mardi Gras ‘Fat Tuesday’ (which occurs the day before Lent starts, so 40 days before Easter) there are special celebrations. Themed poolside activities and games are avilable for the kids, and each year the cast members have an inter-departmental competition to see who can create the best mini parade floats, all made up from decorated ‘pargo’ transport carts. It’s very informal, but a fun and unique event if you happen to be there at the right time.
Please see our main Mardi Gras page for more photos and videos of past events.

Other Public Holidays
Other one-day public holidays – such as Independence Day, Presidents Day and Thanksgiving Day – are often celeberated with additional poolside or lobby-based games and activities for the children, and sometimes there will be an afternoon barbecue located near the Muddy Rivers pool bar on Ol’ Man Island. See signage around the resort while you are there, and keep an eye on our Recreation Schedules page in case we get any advanced notice.
