Magic Bands

Magic Bands are an optional purchasable replacement for the old plastic “Key to the World” keycards that were used for guest room access, theme park admission, charging privileges, etc. These coloured rubber bracelets contain a tiny ‘RFID’ chip which when tapped against Mickey-shaped sensors anywhere around Walt Disney World uniquely identify the guest and thus provide access to a wide variety of services.

Magic Bands are no longer provided as a complimentary perk for hotel guests, but if you don’t want to purchase one you can use the My Disney Experience app to access the same functionality using the NFC technology built in to most modern mobile phones and even some smart watches (Apple only at the moment, but Android could be added at some stage).

Prices range from around $10 for a basic coloured Magic Band 2 (if you can still find one) up to $30–$50 for the newest MagicBand+ rechargeable variants which include synchronised vibration and lighting effects and other interactive extras. It is hard to find the regular style bands any more as none of the park or resort shops carry anything except MagicBand+. However you may still be able to get one by pre-ordering your bands for shipment direct to your home in advance (US guests only) which normally also gives you a $10 discount over the list prices.

If you have trouble using a Magic Band for any reason – or you just feel that Disney has already relieved your family of enough money – you can request regular credit card sized “Key to the World” cards from the Front Desk, which will perform all of the same tap-based functions. It too contains an RFID chip and will be linked to your My Disney Experience account for the duration of your stay.

These are the main functions of Magic Bands:

Previous MagicBand+ purchases will continue to work for future visits as they will remain linked to your personal My Disney Experience account, so there’s no need to re-register them. Just charge them up again and you’re good to go. If you have any problems, just ask at the Front Desk and they can check that the bands are still correctly linked to your MDE account.

The original (non-rechargeable) bands do have a limited-life internal battery that lasts for about two years, but even with older bands all of the physical “tap” functions – such as room access, entering parks, using Lightning Lane bookings, using Dining Plan credits, making payments, etc. – will work fine forever. It’s just longer range stuff that will eventually fail – such as detecting your presence in a ride vehicle to automatically add any on-ride photos or videos onto your Memory Maker/PhotoPass account.

Note: no personal information (name, address, credit card details, etc) are stored on the band itself. It only contains a reference code number, which Disney’s computer systems use to retrieve any necessary information from their secure master database. In short, there are no privacy concerns – beyond that of Disney knowing (and no doubt logging) where you are and what you are doing on their property, but that applied to the old key cards too.

While not an official Disney service, a third-party company called MagicYourBand.com provides dozens of different skins at very reasonable prices which you can apply to any Magic Band, and you can even design your own look based on your own photos or artwork. They offer free shipping worldwide, so well worth checking out.
